Mulled Apple Cider or Mulled Wine

We have a family-friendly version, as well as an 'adults-only' mulled beverage!


You Need:

  • 6 cups fresh, unfiltered apple cider

  • 1 orange with peel, quartered or sliced

  • 10 cloves

  • 3, 3-inch sticks of cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon of nutmeg or ginger

  • 3 star anise

  • 5 pods of cardamom (optional)


Adult Mulled Cider:

Replace apple cider with...

  • 1 bottle of red wine

  • 1/4 cup of brandy or bourbon

  • 1/3 cup of raw honey



Directions:

  • Bring all ingredients to a low boil in a large saucepan.

  • Cover and simmer gently for 20-30 minutes.

  • Pour hot cider through a fine, mesh strainer into heat-proof pitcher.

  • Serve in big mugs and garnish with a cinnamon stick!


Health points:

  • Cinnamon , ginger, cloves, and nutmeg are all thermogenic herbs, meaning they help increase heat in the body, therefore stimulating metabolism. You can burn calories while you sip your cider/wine! WINK!

  • The above herbs are also high in antioxidants and known to possess anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. This drink could be a helpful tonic to combat colds!

  • Red wine contains resveratrol, a potent antioxidant known for supporting heart health. Research shows it can help raise HDL (healthy cholesterol levels).
