Moon Meanings

Are you a night owl? I use to be, but now I am an early riser and early to bed. However, on the nights when a full moon is high and ripe with golden glow... No, I don't howl or chase after it, but I can honestly say I feel its effects. Mainly my energy is ignited in the night hours, where I want to clean my house, exercise, cook, and simply move around! There are countless tales that surround the significance of the moon and all its phases. I usually look for the new moons and full moons, but in fact, there are 8 lunar phases to the moon. www.solarsystem.nasa.gov states, there is a "new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter and waning crescent." How long does this cycle take? Stardate.org explains, "The Moon takes 27.3 days to orbit Earth, but the lunar phase cycle (from new Moon to new Moon) is 29.5 days. The Moon spends the extra 2.2 days "catching up" because Earth travels about 45 million miles around the Sun during the time the Moon completes one orbit around Earth."

This stuff is fascinating, isn't it? So what do the lunar phases mean? Do they actually hold a force that impacts us, humans, here on earth? It certainly affects animal behavior. Think of wolves and coyotes. We always hear the coyotes howling here in northern Maine when a moon is full. And we all know, the moon causes the ebb and flow of our waters. The tide takes its cue from the moon. Therefore, I must agree with Isaac Newton's theory. He proposed that the gravitational pull of the Moon affects fluids within the human body, causing behavior changes, as well as aggravating conditions such as epilepsy and kidney stones as well as menstrual cycles. A harvest moon has been important to agriculture for centuries. A harvest moon is one that is full and nearest to the time of the autumnal equinox. Farmers in the past, and some even now use this special moon as a marker in the season to reap what crops have been sown and prepare for the winter. Finally, we have even more unique moons in our universe, such as the Super Moons, Blood Moons, and Blue Moons!
